Dr. Frank Porter, of Racine, Ohio, is a regionally known landscaper and lecturer who promotes the use of native plants to enhance our living spaces. Connie asked him to help her revitalize the overgrown and weedy landscape around her beautiful home, and he designed a Naturescape on which he began work in the fall of 2009.

April 5, 2012, in Pomeroy, Connie will speak at "Restoring America - One Native Plant at a Time," a conference about using native plants to rebuild wildlife areas. For conference attendees, she offers a 20% discount on lodging if they stay at Sand Ridge B&B. Ask Connie about the discount when you make your reservation.

Please continue to come back to this page for updates on Dr. Porter's work at Sand Ridge Bed and Breakfast, or, better yet, book a visit to see for yourself how beautiful landscaping with native plants can be!

Lillium canadenseDr. Porter describes the progress of the project...

Nestled in the woods near Athens, Ohio, Sand Ridge Bed and Breakfast has become a resting spot for folks interested in learning about the diverse flora of Ohio.

At one time overgrown with non-native and invasive species, the landscape now contains a prairie, woodland garden, butterfly garden, and a bog.  A comfortable to walk trail winds through each of the gardens, allowing visitors to see, touch and smell wildflowers, grasses, vines, shrubs, and trees that once covered the landscape.

No matter what time of the year you are visiting something is in bloom.    If you want a Taste of Southeastern Ohio, Sand Ridge Bed and Breakfast should be on your menu.

Fall 2009

At the beginning of the project, there were non-native trees, shrubs, and weeds covering the landscape. Connie contacted Dr. Porter and just after they started the project, he had this to say...

The hillside after invasive vegetation was removed and before the split rail fence went up.What we are trying to achieve is a "Serving Up of southern Ohio's native plants."

Within the confines of Connie's property, there are several ecological niches that will become the home of a wide diversity of native wildflowers, grasses, vines, trees and shrubs.

Visitors to Sand Ridge B & B will have an opportunity to walk along paths through a small prairie, a woodland garden, and a dense shaded area that will offer Jack-in-the-Pulpits, Green Dragons, Virginia Bluebells, Hepatica, and Wild Ginger just to name a few.
